The honest trade

Size is the projector's whole argument, and it is a strong one: THX's cinematic 40 degrees of view needs the 120-inch picture from 12.0 ft (3.6 m), a distance where the 98-inch TV fills noticeably less of your vision. Per inch of picture, nothing touches a projector.

Everything else favors the TV. A TV makes its own light, so it wins every daylight and lights-on session; a projector's blacks and colors are only as good as your room is dark. The TV needs no throw distance, no screen surface, no bulb or laser aging, and carries its own speakers and tuner. The usual resolution: projector for movie nights, TV for everything the room does in daylight, and this size class is where the budgets genuinely overlap.

At 4K, the larger picture has lower central PPD from the same seat. The reference distances above show where each reaches 60 PPD; crossing that reference does not make them equally sharp. Projector light output, contrast, focus and room lighting also affect the result.

For a diagonal d and aspect ratio w:h, screen width is d × w / √(w² + h²), and height is d × h / √(w² + h²). Area is width × height; PPI is √(horizontal pixels² + vertical pixels²) / diagonal in inches. Results are rounded for display.

The 60 central pixels-per-degree reference is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee that two displays look identical. Eyesight, contrast, source quality and panel technology also matter. Check sharpness at your own viewing distance.
